From House of Miniatures to House of Modern

Back to minis!  Several months ago, HBS had a sale on some House of Miniatures dollhouse furniture kits...they were $1.00 each so even with the shipping, they were a super deal.  I bought them primarily because they were cheap and I figured I could alter them to make them more modern or sell them.  The other day I decided to see what I could do with one of the kits.

This is the kit I started with, a very traditional chest of drawers.

This is what I made with the kit. They seem to fit together quite nicely and the wood is nice and smooth, there wasn't much sanding that needed to be done.  I only had to cut a few new parts such as the legs and one of the tops.

I used some of my free laminate samples for the drawer fronts.

I really like the textures.

These are the left over pieces from the kit.

(Let me know if anyone wants the left overs, I'd hate for them to go to waste)

It's amazing how much a few parts and some paint can make a piece of furniture look so different. Stay tuned for more kit transformations.  I've already started two more!

  5. I love them! I could also use the leftovers I'm just getting started and don't have much yet. Though my dining room would disagree. ;)

  6. Very creative transformation! I love the textured drawer fronts. (Er ... how do you open the drawers, with no handles?)

    1. Good question! I just tilt them forward. It's not practical in real life, but OK for minis!

  9. I'll never look at that chest of drawers the same way again. That's pretty impressive. I have a few Chippendale kits that I always mean to get at, but it's taking me "FOREVERS". Cool revamp. Definitely an improvement, but I'm bias.

  12. I have a box full of those kits on the top shelf of a closet. I have no idea how I accumulated so many, but every time I look at them, I am never inspired. How clever of you to see the potential! I definitely will take down the box now.

    1. Hey Neen! I hope you do. I honestly thought I'd re-sell the ones I have, now I'm excited to make them into something cool. I know YOU can do that after seeing what you did with the dollar store finds for your deco house.

  16. This is a fantastic idea! I took advantage of the sale HBS was having on these as well and therefore have a cabinet filled with kits. This is a great way to update them!

  20. I have a whole set of very, very rustic dollhouse furniture. A kit by Greenleaf. I don't think I can do this to it but I'm going to try your techniques. Thx.
