Dangerous Hobbies

Warning: This post is not who are squeamish, have a weak stomach or faint at the sight of blood.  If this describes you...look away!

Some people thrive in the thrill of dangerous hobbies such ad base jumping, skydiving or demolition derbies.  Not this girl...my dangerous hobby is making miniatures!

My husband and I have decided to so the miniature show here sponsored by The Museum of Miniature Houses.  The show is the weekend of September 19-20 so we only have 6-7 weeks to make our inventory for the show.  He started making a few things for me to laminate which I did.  Then of course I had to trim the pieces from the laminate so he can router the edges.  I was on my last piece for this batch and apparently not being as careful as I should have been and cut my damn thumb on my Proxxon table saw.  Ouch!

Not wanting to pay for an E.R. visit, we stopped by our local Urgent Care...they closed at 5:00.  Really? Not exactly convenient.  Thank goodness for smart phones. We found a place close by that was still open. FYI, Med Check is not just for illnesses...they do stitches too and they were fabulous!  The funny thing is that when the nurse asked what happened, I told her that I cut myself on the table saw she said "you're my kind of girl" and of course we got into a conversation about minis.

There are four stitches that you can seen and one you can't.

The bonus is that they throw away the instruments after they use them. Since I make miniatures, they gave them to me. Sweet! I've already used the little scissors.

After everything was a prettied up.

Needless to say, this won't stop me from doing much, but will I milk this for all I can? Like making my family feel sorry for me and do the dishes and laundry for me?

You betcha!

  1. Oh noes! I'm so glad it was only a few stitches, that was scary :( Yes, ham it up, it's a legit injury that should not be mixed with dirty dish water and laundry.

  2. Oh no! I hate it when that happens! So sorry for your wounding, but score on the surgical tools. Pink thoughts for rapid healing.

  4. Milk it for sure! I'm sure it should be good for at least a few vacuums, clothes washing etc.

But.... surely the mention of having to pay for an E.R. visit is a typo? 8-O

  9. So sorry about your thumb...but getting those tools almost make it worthwhile. I have a friend whose doctor husband would give me scissors and hemostats to do crafts with...but then they divorced, darn it!

  10. Son of a B! OUCH. Had to happen on the last piece. Typical. So sorry for you!!! My 4 yr old was practicing some parkour, trying to jump from one kitchen stool to another and split her chin open. After 5pm of course. I called our insurance, they sent me to the ER as they don't have nor cover any urgent care. I had to pay $250 just to be admitted, and they will bill me for the co-pay and additional fees.

Probably would have been cheaper to go to urgent care and pay cash. Kinda defeats the purpose of having stitches. Ugh, America, can't wait for Health Reform to kick in.

    1. Ouch! Those crazy kids! Our insurance makes us pay extra to go to the ER too. I'm still not a fan of health care reform but that's a whole other blog... LOL!

    2. Typo, I meant, Kinda defeats the purpose of having "insurance". :D
I just wish insurance was more affordable and covered more. We pay a lot to be covered but my 1 hour surgery ended up costing us over $4,000 out of pocket! Now that I've met my deductible I'm trying to figure out what other possible surgeries I could use. :P
