OK, So I got the pics taken and in the mail today. The pics looked pretty good on the computer, but I was really dissapointed about how they turned out when they were developed. The only wall I have in my real house that is blank is in my dining room and it's a muted pea green. So that's the wall I used...it looks awful as the background! Since the deadline for the Creatin' Contest is midnight Monday and there isn't any mail on Sunday, I had no choice but to send them in.
I made the glass wall removable. It's made of 1/4" plexiglass with model pinstriping to separate the panes. It slides along aluminum C channels at the top and bottom. The front door is made the same way.
The furniture on the upper deck is vintage german from Ebay. The big cactus is from Hancock Fabrics, the flowers are an Ebay find and the little table is from Miniatures.com. The orange rug is part of a placemat from CB2, it hides the wiring for the fans in the sun room below. I also made the glass french doors from plexiglass and aluminum rods.

The house is front opening. The front panels are held on with rare earth magnets. The siding is 1/8" birch plywood cut into 2" strips with teak veneer in between the strips.
The sun room and windows are all made with the same plexiglass as the slider wall. I also used the same aluminum chanels to hold the top and bottom of the sun room walls and the same pinstriping for window panes.
Your house looks fabulous. I love all the "glass" very cool. IndyPoppy
ReplyDeleteI think your house is stunning, and your eye for design is brilliant. The floor in your upstairs sitting room is beautifully worn, the planks in the dining room are on a diagonal and reflect the planking on the outside of the house. The planks work very well with the "concrete" floating stairs (it looks real, but I assume it isn't), and the cool (as in both temperature and chicness) lighting flows through the house and makes it welcoming. I don't know how you were able to create the worn flooring, or floating concrete stairs, but they are wonderful. The windows, if I drove by a house like this I would stop and wonder who the cutting edge architect was. You are very talented!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Neen,
DeleteI love the glass room topped by the deck. Any chance of more interior pix?
ReplyDeleteOf course!
DeleteSo Impressive! Your are an architect. CM
ReplyDeleteUm....this is pretty phenomenal! Wowza

ReplyDeleteit looks Awesome :)
ReplyDeletetutorial on the glas pleaaase!!!
ReplyDeleteOut of the ball park. This is so brilliant, don't even know where to start. Architecture really is stunning and I love how you did all of the glass. Good luck, this has got to be a winner!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I think I'm going lay off the contests for a little while. I'm wiped!
DeleteFirst. I'm pissed that HBS is so behind the times and requires printed photos. What age is this? I don't understand why you can't submit online, or by sending digital pics to an email address at the least.
ReplyDeleteSecond, I am at a loss. So far I've only seen the houseboat first place pictures, and comparing to that, I can't believe you didn't place. I'm relieved that I didn't enter this year, because if you didn't place with this house, I didn't stand a chance. Your finishes are spectacular here. What 5 pictures did you send?
Third, one can only speculate what the judges were looking for, but I wonder if they factor in how many of your materials and accessories are purchased from their store. Maybe not intentionally, but you tend to like what you are familiar with, so if you see a house(boat) filled to the brim with the products you sell, you might be drawn to it more.
I am very curious to see the other winners. So far you are still the big winner in my book for this contest.
Thanks Megan! I was a little disappointed when I found out. As we all know, the mini world and the real world are made up of mostly traditional furnishings and decorating (oh...and beige too!) LOL! You may be on to something with the HBS and their familiar items. I also think they like to see landscaping and dolls in the scenes, which I didn't do. At least they will have the Honorable Mention pics in the new catalog along with all of the winners!
